On Wednesday, August 9, Grandmaster Richard Byrne hosted Karate Legend Joe Lewis in the ATA's Malden headquarters for a special seminar. Many ATA members, as well as some non-ATA guests (including Professor Dave Castoldi and some of his Jiu Jitsu students), gathered to study under the man who was twice voted Greatest Karate Fighter in History by polls of his peers. Joe Lewis worked with everyone who was anyone in Karate over the past 40 years, and trained for a time under Bruce Lee.
Bruce Lee said once, "If I tell you that I'm the quickest fighter and the toughest fighter in the world, you'd think I was bragging. But if I told you I wasn't, you'd know I was lying..."- Joe Lewis, 8/9/2006
It was a fantastic event. The focus was on sparring, as Joe talked about timing, rhythm, striking, distance, response - he crammed a 6 week training course into 2 1/2 hours. Joe is in the Black Belt magazine Hall of Fame twice - once as a fighter, and a second time as an instructor. His seminar was, as his seminars always are, both extremely informative and very entertaining. Great material, great drills - a real treat for everyone in attendance.
